Leon William Harman, while being surrounded by his loving family, went to be with God on June 22, 2012. His presence blessed his family and others for 91 years. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and public visitation will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm on Tuesday, June 26th at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2800 Turner Rd, Ponca City, OK. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, June 27th at 10:00am at First Lutheran Church, 1101 N. 4th St., Ponca City, OK. This celebration will be followed by a graveside service at Resthaven Memorial Park Cemetery.
Leon was born April 25, 1921 to Joseph and Essie Harman in Cashion, OK. He attended Cashion High School graduating in 1939. He completed an Accounting degree from Hills Business School in 1941. In May 1942 he joined the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in San Bernadino, CA. He received his honorable discharge in May 1943 and relocated to Oklahoma City, OK. On November 28, 1943 he was united in marriage to Mary Kathern Huntleman at her parents home in Cashion, OK. He was employed by R.D. Cravens in Oklahoma City until 1956 when he and his family relocated to Ponca City, OK. He continued his professional career with Conoco Oil Company. Leon worked for Conoco Oil until he retired on January 1, 1981.
Upon retirement, Leon enjoyed many various activities. He served on the Conoco Credit Union Loan Board. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church where he served as a treasurer for several years. He served the Ponca City community by delivering bakery items to various non-profit organizations.
The Lord blessed Leon was blessed with 5 wonderful daughters, 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren (soon to be 25), and 2 great-great-grandchildren. He absolutely adored each and every one of them. He was very active in their lives. He considered it an honor and privilege to take them to and from school each day. He loved to attend each sporting event that he could. While in attendance he even loved to put in his two cents to the umpires. His favorite sports were football, baseball, basketball, and softball. He enjoyed coaching girls softball throughout the years. He was a very big supporter of various band organizations as well.
He loved camping and traveling with his children and grandchildren. His favorite trip was to Germany in 1987 to see his grandson Ronnie who was stationed there with the U.S. Army. Leons most recent passion was from the farm. He enjoyed long Sunday drives to go watch the harvest workers. He loved to ride the combine for hours on end. He also enjoyed helping drive the wheat trucks during harvest and feeding the baby calves.
Leon is survived by his wife Kathern of the home, five daughters, & their families. His daughters include Delores & Earl Shortridge, Kathleen & Pete Hopkins, Sandra Foster, Brenda & Shawn Lewis, & Linda & Roger Kelle. Grandchildren include James Shortridge & Heather Altman & family; Lynette & Greg Humphreys & family; Tonya & Kevin Prosch & family; Katie Palmer & family; Ronnie & Lavonna Hopkins & family; KaLyn & Danny Burris & family; Brent & Kari Hopkins & family; Shasta & Adam Belty & family; Kyle & Christi Foster & family; Jason & Toma Foster & family; Sara & Casey Smith & family; Shane Lewis; Heather & Jason Peck; Josh & Sarah Kelle & family; Jared & Ashley Kelle.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2800 Turner Rd, Ponca City, OK 74604.
