Ada Ruth Gottfried

June 5, 1929 — July 31, 2014

Ada Ruth Gottfried, 85, of Stillwater passed from this life on July 31, 2014 at her home with her supportive and loving family at her side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and a service celebrating her life will be held at 2pm on Monday, August 4, 2014 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater with burial following at Grace Hill Cemetery in Perry, OK. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 3, 2014 from 1pm to 6pm. Ada Ruth Shelton was born on June 5, 1929 in Perry, OK. She was one of 20 children (including 3 sets of twins) born to George Lewis and Laura Lorraine (Griggs) Shelton. She was raised and attended schools in Perry until the age of 15 when she married Charles Gottfried, a young man whose parents farmed with Ada"s parents. Consequently, Ada"s sister Ida Fay would go on to marry Charles"s brother Walter. Shortly after their marriage, Ada Ruth and Charles began a family which would grow to include their 10 children. Ada Ruth spent the next three decades raising her children and following Charles all over the south central U.S. due to his job in the oilfield industry. Each time Charles was relocated, Ada packed up the house and her 10 children and moved on to the next location without ever complaining or being discontent. Charles was severely burned in two separate gas plant accidents in 1969 and 1979 and Ada Ruth spent months nursing him back to health with her own special remedy of love and good cooking. In 1973, the family relocated to the Perkins area before putting down permanent roots in Stillwater in 1979. After raising her 10 children, Ada was blessed with the opportunity of helping to raise one of her grandsons. Charles retired from the oilfields in 1990 and Ada Ruth assisted him on their hobby farm south of town where they raised cow, chickens, and an amazing garden. She enjoyed quilting, fishing and traveling to the mountains. Ada Ruth Gottfried was an independent, strong willed woman who had no problem telling you exactly how she felt. She had a great sense of humor and would talk to anyone, about anything, anywhere. She accomplished many wonderful things in her 85 years of life and she did them all without ever driving a car. Her proudest accomplishment was her family, whom she loved very much. She was a loving mother who expected her kids to abide by her strict rules. She had no problem keeping up with her 10 kids and many nights she would feed her 10 plus another 10 friends that her kids brought home for dinner. She had a special love for her grand children and she was never happier than when she had a child or two in her lap. She was preceded in death by her parents, three children: Judy Gottfried, Betty Kendrick, and Kenny Gottfried. She is survived by her husband and best friend of nearly 70 years Charles Gottfried, of Stillwater. 8 children: Leonard Gottfried and wife Lori, of Evanston, WY, Kathy Jack and husband Thomas, of Perry, Floyd Gottfried and wife Melba, of Tryon, Ronnie Gottfried and wife Rowena, of Stillwater, David Gottfried and wife Linda, of Calumet, MI, Karen Helfenbein of Carney, Jerry Gottfried of Aztec, NM, and Charles Maxwell Gottfried of Stillwater. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Ada"s name to the American Kidney Foundation. Condolences may be sent to the family via an online guestbook at www.pmcfh.com
