Barbara Hicks-Loy was born on December 3, 1936 to Ernest and Leota Combs. Growing up in Ripley, Ok, Barbara enjoyed collecting milk bottles and exchanging them for money to see a movie with her sisters. At the age of 17, she married her first husband and a year later their only child, Debra, was born. Though her marriage lasted only a few short years, Barbara was a dedicated mother working several jobs to support her and Debbie. Barbara worked at Carp's Bowling Alley and Swim's Cafe while Debbie was young, and then worked at Brown's Bottle Shop for 25 years.
Barbara's zest for life was contagious and drew people to her. She was a dedicated and proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother affectionately known as Granny. Barbara had a very active role in raising her grandsons, Shannon and Scott. She enjoyed having them over to swim in her pool, going to their sporting events, and having them help with her garden. Barbara spent her later years enjoying companionship with her many dogs, especially her Chihuahuas. This past year, Barbara has really enjoyed spending time with her only great-grandson, Kannon. Laughing and playing with Kannon brought back many memories of time spent with her grandsons.
Barbara was the matriarch of a very close knit family. The relationship between Barbara and her daughter Debbie transcended mother-daughter, they were best friends. Her passing has left a void in the family that can never be filled. Barbara will be missed dearly and forever in the hearts of many.
Barbara is preceded in death by her husband, Myron Loy; parents, Ernest and Leota (Brewer) Combs; three brothers, Waldo, JC, and Roe; and a close companion, David Turner. She is survived by her daughter, Debra Shipman of Stillwater; two siblings, Peggy Venable and husband, Bob of Stillwater, Betty Going of Hesston, Kansas; grandchildren, Shannon Shipman and wife, Kami of Stillwater, Scott Shipman and wife, Nicki of Stillwater; one great-grandchild, Kannon Shipman.
