Betty Mae Furman Akin, 72, of Stillwater, passed from this life October 9, 2010 in Stillwater, OK. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 10:00am Thursday, October 14 at Calvary Assembly of God in Stillwater. Services have been entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
Betty Mae Furman Akin was born Jan 30, 1938 in Stillwater, OK to Leroy Furman and Ada Madison Furman. She married Pete Akin and to this marriage a daughter, Ann Marie Akin was born. Betty made her home in Sherman Texas, where she was employed for 23 yrs as a mechanist for Texas Instruments. Betty and Ann were always involved in something together from throwing newspapers, to doing ceramics, to who knows what else. In 1992, Betty moved back to Stillwater, OK. She was employed as an administrative assistant at the University & Community Federal Credit Union. For the past 12 years, she has been a proud member of the sales team at Top Value Mobile Homes in Stillwater. She had a great working relationship, as well as friendship, with her boss Bob West and his wife Arvilla.
In her spare time, Betty enjoyed working in her ceramic shop. Betty loved her babies (her dogs), each and every one of them. She loved watching Oklahoma State University athletics, volunteering at Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue, and spending time with her family. She was always in charge of organizing the Furman Family Reunion and was more than willing to give anything she had to a friend or neighbor in need. Betty Furman Akin had a big heart and will be loved and missed by those who shared her life with her.
She is survived by her daughter Ann and husband Carlas Cooksey, of Stillwater, OK. One brother: Albert Furman of Stillwater, OK. Two half-brothers: Norman Edwards and Lamar Edwards. Her neighbor, Debbie Fultz, who she considered a second daughter. She is preceded in death by her parents, her half-sister Bonnie, and two brothers, James and Ory.
Honorary pallbearers for the service include: Zachary Furman, Jim Furman, Dan Furman, Bill Furman, Trent Dawes, and Travis Dawes.
The family requests that in leiu of flowers, make donations to Tiny Paws Kitten Rescue in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home. Public visitation will be held from 5pm-8pm on Wednesday, Oct 13, 2010 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home at 5106 N. Washington in Stillwater.
