Carol Sue Fairbanks, 65, of Stillwater passed peacefully from this life on the evening of May 17, 2016, with her loving family by her side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater and a mass of Catholic burial will be held at 1pm on Friday May 20, 2016, at St. John's University Parish Catholic Church in Stillwater. A rosary will be held on Thursday evening at 7pm at the church. Public visitation will be held on Thursday from 12pm-5pm at Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
Carol was born on July 23, 1950, in Emporia, KS to Howard Charles and Rosline (Robert) Fellman. She was raised in Osage City, KS, graduating from OCHS in 1968. Following graduation, Carol enrolled at Kansas State University where she would meet and marry the love of her life, David Fairbanks. She later transferred to Oklahoma State University where she went on to receive her degree from the college of business in 1973. Carol worked for Stillwater Milling Co. from 1973 until her first daughter was born in 1978. Carol spent the next 10 years raising her four children. In 1988 she accepted a position in the human resources department at Stillwater Public Schools. She spent 22 years with SPS and made many wonderful friends and memories there. She retired in 2014.
Carol was a longtime member of the St. John University Parish in Stillwater and she was formerly involved in their women's guild. She also served in several capacities for her children's PTA groups over the years and was the ultimate sports mom. When Carol was not working or volunteering she could often times be found watching the food network, game shows, or supporting her favorite sports teams, KSU and OSU.
Carol Fairbanks was a well-rounded woman who was always reliable and didn't mind being everything to everybody. Although she never shied away from hard work, Carol prioritized her family above all else in her life and she loved "all things family." The wonderful marriage she had with her best friend David helped to lay a solid foundation for the family to build on. Carol and David loved each other as much on their last day together as they did on the day they took their vows. They enjoyed many wonderful week long road trips together and made a lifetime of good memories.
Carol enjoyed the opportunity to watch her grandkids after school and she made it a point to be at their various activities, supporting them just like she had done with her own children. Holidays were a big deal for the Fairbanks family, particularly for Carol. Her extensive decoration and penchant for memorable celebrations earned her the nickname "Holiday Carol" or "Christmas Carol." Carol was a kind-hearted and generous woman who faced everything in life with class and certain tenacity. The legacy of selflessness and generosity will continue to live on in the lives of those she loved and she will certainly be missed by all who knew her.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of Judith Karman Bristol Hospice and the Tulsa Cancer Institute in Stillwater, especially Dr. Scott Cole, for their wonderful and compassionate care during Carol's illness.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband David Fairbanks of the home; four children: Elaine Renfrow and husband Jeff of Prosper, TX, Ellen Wood and husband Jason of Stillwater, OK, Frank Fairbanks and wife Courtney of Dallas, TX and Erin Fairbanks and wife Amanda of Ft.
