Carolyn Sue Viele Baker, 81, of Ponca City passed on Sunday, March 6, 2022. Dighton-Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater has been entrusted with her funeral arrangements.
Sue was born on October 12, 1940, to Ted A. and Katheryne Dillard Jones in Yale, Oklahoma. After living in Yale until the age of five, her family moved to Sedan, KS then to Iowa then back to Chautauqua, KS where she was baptized at the age of 14 along with her father and brother in the Baptist church of Chautauqua. Sue graduated from Sedan High School in Sedan, KS where she was a majorette, cheerleader, and high school prom queen in 1958.
She married Jim Viele, Jr. on July 26, 1958, and they celebrated 50 years together before he went home to Jesus. She enjoyed RVing, fishing, crafting, and going on special trips such as Alaska for the summer, Hawaii for their 25th anniversary, and Disney World with grandkids. They loved traveling, but most of all she loved spending time with their two children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
During her working career she worked for Conoco from 1973-1991 then for RCB Bank from 2003-2011.
She married Ron Baker on September 3, 2016, and they lived in Ponca City enjoying their time together. She enjoyed traveling with Ron to visit extended family and friends in Kansas, Louisiana, Texas, and Colorado. She especially enjoyed attending First Baptist Church, serving on the Hospitality Committee, and worshiping with her Sunday school friends.
Sue is survived by her husband Ron and her brother Dick Jones and wife Nita of Sedan, KS. Also, Sue’s daughter Debbie and husband Darrell Grimley of San Antonio, TX , and Sue’s son Jim Viele, III and wife Amy of Greenville, TX. Along with her granddaughter Amanda and husband John Harms of Garden City, KS and their children Quinlynn, Kegan, and Hattie, and Laura Jackson and husband Rodney and their children Rylie and Piper of Oklahoma City, OK; and her grandson Matthew Grimley of San Antonio, TX. Also, her granddaughter Sarah and husband Darren Grace of Bartlesville, OK, and her granddaughter Emily and husband Andrew Martin of Greenville, TX and their children Emma and Ian.
Sue is also survived by several cousins, her nieces Melodi Jones and family, Monica Crum and family, and nephew Mark Jones and family. Also, her extended Baker family: Ronnie Baker and wife Corey and children J. T. and Shelby; Kim Lagea and daughter Ashley and husband Waylon Brandon and children Juliet and Scarlett; Dennis Baker and children Kodi, Mallory, and Taylor.
She was preceded in death by husband Jim Viele, Jr., parents, grandparents and a great-grandson.
Funeral Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Ponca City, OK on Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 10:00 AM with burial at the Odd Fellows Cemetery in Ponca City. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Ponca City, c/o Dighton-Marler Funeral Home, 5106 N Washington St. Stillwater, OK 74075.
