Charles W. Shannon, 85, of Stillwater, passed from this life on Sunday, May 27 surrounded by his loving family. Funeral services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral home and will be held at 10:30am Friday, June 1 at the Stillwater Church of Christ. Burial will be held at 2:30 pm at the Noble I.O.O.F Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 8am-8pm on Thursday.
Charles Wantland Shannon was the only child born to William T. and Julia H. Shannon of Noble, OK on April 15, 1927. His family moved to Ringling, OK in 1934 and he graduated from high school in 1945. Shortly after graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged in late 1946. Charles enrolled and graduated from Oklahoma State University (formerly Oklahoma A&M) in 1950. While in college, he met and married the love of his life, Marilyn McCollum of Ardmore on Sept 3, 1948. After graduation, Charles and Marilyn settled in Ardmore and Charles began his career with the U.S. Postal Service. In 1968, the family moved to Stillwater and in 1984, Charles retired from the USPS. Several years after Marilyn's death, Charles relocated to Golden Oaks Village in Stillwater, where he made many friends.
Charles was active in the Church of Christ, serving as an elder and deacon in Ardmore and a deacon in Stillwater. An avid sports fan, Charles and Marilyn attended OSU football, basketball, and baseball games, as well as wrestling matches. He enjoyed listening to Bob Wills music and working on his stamp collection. Charles was a kind and generous man who loved to make people laugh. He was the life of the party and rarely met a stranger. He will be truly missed by all those who knew him.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of more than 52 years, Marilyn. He is survived by his three children: Richard W. Shannon of Moore, OK, Debbie Powell and husband Ron, of Norman, and Beverly Shannon of Stillwater. Five grandchildren: Amber Gifford of Stillwater, OK, Brian Powell of Moore, OK, Ashlee Meese of Los Angeles, CA, Ryan Cost of Broken Arrow, OK and Camden Cost of Prettywater, OK. One great-grandson: Dillon Charles Meese.
