Clarice Ramona Mccarty

Clarice Ramona Currier was born to Samuel and Mary Currier on December 5, 1915 at the family homestead south of Fowler, Kansas. She attended school at the Moundview Country School. The family moved to Plains, Kansas when she was a teenager, and she graduated from Plains High School in 1935. She married Herbert Eugene McCarty of Plains, Kansas on October 4, 1936. They had two children, Darrel and Donna Jean.
Clarice was a homemaker and farm wife during the years her children were growing up. She was very involved in community work and organizations, including the County Home Demonstration Unit and the First Methodist Church, where she was a long-time member. She also worked in the Plains school lunchroom. When Herbert became the undersheriff for Meade County they moved to Meade, Kansas. She worked as a cook for the jail and as a radio dispatcher. She and Herbert served as foster parents for at-risk teenagers. She also work for awhile as a nurses aid at the Lone Tree Nursing Home.
Clarice was an artist who worked in oils, pastels, and textile painting. She organized the Meade Art Guild. Other hobbies included handwork, gardening and reading. She organized Phone Pals for people who lived alone, for which she received state-wide recognition. She became a member of the First Baptist Church and served on many committees and in several different capacities over the years.
She moved to Stillwater, OK in 2005 to live near her daughter. She attended Sunnybrook Christian Church. She helped organized a weekly Bible Study at Stillwater Christian Villa where she lived. Clarice died August 20, 2007 at the Oklahoma Heart Hospital, Oklahoma City, OK.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Mary Currier, her husband, Herbert, one brother, Robert Currier, and four sisters; Vaneita Magill, Esther Hayes, Eleanor Lehn, and Ruth Miller.
She is survived by her children; Darrel, and wife Nancy, McCarty of Prescott Valley, AZ., and Donna Jean, and husband Darryl Mortensen, Stillwater, OK, three grandchildren: Deborah, and husband Kelvin Stanley, Waddell, AZ, Daniel McCarty, Phoenix, AZ, and Vernon, and wife Kelly, Mortensen, Descanso, CA. four great grandchildren: Lisa, Lierin, Jonathan, and David of Waddell, AZ. She is also survived by one sister, Jeanne Marx of Plains, KS, and two sisters-in- law, Ruth Deprin and husband Louis, Dekalb, IL and Idela McCarty of Lakin, KS, and a number of nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service at Stillwater Christian Villa on Tuesday Aug. 28 at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Paul Anderson will officiate. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Meade, Kansas on Friday, Aug.24 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Harry Fink officiating, with burial at the family plot in the Plains Cemetery.
