Dewane Gum

July 31, 1963 — September 30, 2014

DeWane Porkchop Gum, 51, of Morrison passed from this life on Sept 30, 2014 in Oklahoma City, OK. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a service celebrating his life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, Oct 4, 2014 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home chapel in Stillwater.
DeWane David Gum was born on July 31, 1963 in Eureka, KS to Russell DeWane Gum and Caroline Sue (Altis) Gum. In 1974, DeWane moved to Burbank, OK where he attended grade school. DeWane spent his first three years of high school at Shidler High School where he excelled at football. In 1980, DeWanes family moved to Red Rock, OK where he graduated from high school in 1981.
Following graduation, DeWane went to work at Ditch Witch in Perry where he spent the next 15 years as a machinist and CNC Mechanic. He enjoyed his time at Ditch Witch and made many wonderful friends there. In 1997, DeWane needed a change of scenery so he accepted a position as a truck driver and spent more than a decade driving for Glass Trucking in Newkirk, OK and Mercer Trucking out of Kentucky. DeWane returned to Ditch Witch in 2009 but his declining health forced him into an early retirement in 2012.
DeWane was a hard headed and hard working man who enjoyed life. He was generous and was very independent. He loved to do trap shooting and assembling model cars and trucks. He had a passion for his toys and could often be found outside playing with his remote control cars, planes, and helicopters. DeWane was a competitive guy and loved to race his cars on the dirt track in Enid. He was also an accomplished drag car racer, winning his division at the races in Ark City, KS and he also found time to compete in several mini tractor pulls. DeWane was a single father of four wonderful children and he was never happier than when he was spending time with his kids. Even though he faced many challenges with his health, DeWane always made it a priority to be there to support his children at their various hobbies and sporting events. He was a loving son, a caring brother, a protective father, and an honest friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father Russell Gum, a sister Caroline Elaine Gum, his grandparents, and his loyal dog D.T. He is survived by his four children, whom he was very proud, Donald Gum a marine stationed in San Diego, CA, Justin, Caralyssa, and Garrett Gum of the home. DeWane is also survived by his mother Caroline Gum of Red Rock, OK and a brother Randy Gum, wife Melissa, niece Jalissa of Red Rock, OK and nephew Josh of Maud, OK. He is also survived by his two dogs Dinky and Bonkers.
The family requests that no flowers be sent and that all donations be made to the MCBA for DeWane Gum and mailed to First National Bank 301 Woolsey Ave, Morrison, OK 73061
