Everett Charles Short, Jr. was born on December 27, 1931 in Monette, MO to Everett Charles Short, Sr. and Juanita (Craker) Short. He grew up and attended schools in Missouri and following his graduation from Huntsville High School, Huntsville, MO , Everett joined the United States Air Force where he served as an F80 pilot from 1952 to 1955. After being honorably discharged from the Air Force, Everett enrolled at Kent State University where he received his bachelor of science degree in 1958. Everett moved to Colorado where he attended Colorado State University and in 1962, he graduated with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Following his graduation from CSU, Everett attended the University of Minnesota, where in 1968 he received his Ph.D.
During this time in his life, Everett was blessed with the birth of his three sons, Jim, Steve, and Charlie. From 1968 to 1979 he taught classes at UMN, and in 1979 he took a position as the head of the Physiological Science Dept. at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. In 1982 while working at OSU he met Susanne Trent and in 1984, they were married. In 1987, Everett and Susanne purchased land near Perkins, OK where they began Alpha Angus Farm and raised registered Angus cattle. In 1990 Susanne gave birth to their son Charles and a few short years later, Everett retired from OSU to spend time with his family on the farm they loved so much.
Everett was an intelligent man who wasn't afraid of hard work. He loved intellectual conversation. He also enjoyed welding and building things, reading, studying the Civil War, and watching and studying the different birds around his property. He had a recent fascination with Cornell University's online birdcam through the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. He was a member of the American Angus Association and the Oklahoma Cattleman's Association.
Although he had many prestigious academic accomplishments, he was most proud of the family and animals that he and Susanne had raised on their farm. Everett's legacy of hard work and dedication will live on through the lives of his sons and the thousands of students he touched during his teaching career. Everett C. Short, Jr. was a loving husband, a caring father, proud grandfather, a brilliant educator, and a loyal friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Dr. Short was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William, and a brother-in-law Wills Ryals.
He is survived by his wife Susanne of the home. Four sons: Charles of Perkins, OK, Jim and wife Tricia of CO, Steve and wife Lisa of ID, and Charlie and wife Diane of TX. Four grandchildren: Jessie, Jamie, Danny, and Kari.
