Dr. James Andrew Jackson, 86, a Stillwater resident, went into the arms of his maker on February 8, 2011. Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home of Stillwater and Miles Funeral Service of Winfield, Kansas have been entrusted with the arrangements. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 1:00pm in the Chapel of Miles Funeral Home of Winfield, KS. Burial will be held at Highland Cemetery.
Mr. Jackson was born May 30, 1924 to Willie E. and Ola Gaulden Jackson in Wynnewood, OK. He was raised and graduated high school in Wynnewood. He then entered the U.S. Army where he proudly served actively in World Word II, including the Luzon Campaign. James was awarded a WWII Victory Medal before being honorably discharged. James met and married the love of his life, Lena Cox. James and Lena resided in Winfield, KS where James held medical technologist positions with both Newton and St. Marys Hospital.
In 1960, the Jackson family moved to Ponca City, where James worked as a medical technologist at the hospital in Ponca City while earning his masters degree at Oklahoma State University. The family moved to Stillwater in 1969 where James taught at the university while obtaining his Doctorate. Afterward, he worked fulltime in Veterinary Medical Research at Oklahoma State Universitys Department of Parasitology, Microbiology, and Public Health. Additionally, he studied at the Mycology Division at the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, GA, and medical mycology at the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Jackson was a leader in veterinary sciences and was published for his many studies and works including papers on lymphofollicular hyperplasia of the canine species and immunodiagnosis of systemic mycoses.
Dr. Jackson retired in 1986, after which he continued to publish articles. He also took time to enjoy his hobbies: hunting, fishing, and raising animals on his farm. At times he could be seen raising horses, which he rode as part of the Meridian Roundup Club. He also raised cows, chickens, and his favorite ostriches, Bonnie and Clyde. As adept as he was at raising animals, his greatest love was raising his wonderful family, and he truly loved each and every one of them.
James was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Stillwater, OK.
In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and prayer in his wife Lena of home; sons James A. Jackson and wife Mae of Winfield, KS and Curtis Williams and wife Pam of Quincy, Massachusetts; daughters Jacqueline Phillips and her husband Dr. Robert Phillips, Marsha Gould, Willetta Jackson, and Marlena Jackson of Oklahoma City, OK, as well as a great host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
