Leon was born in Stillwater on August 5, 1940 to Luman Lester Wood and Beulah Ellen Blue Wood. He married Margaret Viola Hill December 28, 1965 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. They celebrated their 50th anniversary in December.

He attended Stillwater schools, graduating from Stillwater High School in 1958. He was accepted into the Naval School of Music and served in the Navy Band in Washington D.C. during the Kennedy years. After the Navy he attended Emmaus Bible School where he met his wife. Married in Canada, they lived there for a year before returning to Oklahoma.
