Edward Allen Long Sr

Edgar Allen Long, Sr, passed away Thursday, January 1, 2009 at his home in Stillwater, Ok. He was born February 5, 1917 in a farm home outside Wyandotte, OK, to Grover E. and Palma (Ellison) Long, Sr. He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father, two brothers: James Long and Grover E. Long, Jr., and two sisters, Kathryn Garroutte and Jean Capstick. He also has two surviving sisters Juanita McQuistion and Claudine Burnside, both of Wyandotte, OK.
Mr. Long is survived by his wife of 72 years, Lucille Long. They had four children: Frances Mihura, Stillwater, OK; Edgarita Long Tahlequah, OK; Edgar Long, Jr., and Kay Taylor, both of Stillwater. He had five grandchildren; Joni (Mihura) and husband Greg Meyer of Toledo, Ohio; Laurie (Long) and husband Fernando Ferreira of Barcelona, Spain; Bruce Mihura of Austin, Texas; Kirk Long of Altus, OK: and Amy (Long) and husband Bryan James of Verdigris, OK He also had ten great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Long attended grades 1-8 at Seneca Indian School and Pawnee Grade School, and high school at Chilocco Indian School. He then graduated from Wichita Business School. He was a great baseball player as short stop called Baseball King for the many home runs he hit, and was pursued by a major baseball league in Kansas City.
Mr. Long worked in Pryor, OK until he was drafted into the United States Navy where he served from 1943 to 1945. After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he moved to Pawnee, OK, where he worked as a projectionist at the Ritz Theater, and at the Pawnee Chief, until moving to Stillwater in 1955 where he worked for Frontier Printers and Oklahoma State University. In Pawnee, he was also the Director of the Powwow Club and a member of the Pawnee Indian Veterans Club.
Mr. Long was active in the First Baptist Church in Pawnee, where he was a Sunday School Teacher and Boy Scout Master. He was also a deacon and became head deacon at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Stillwater, where he also started a Sunday school class for athletes attending Oklahoma State University.
Services will be held at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 902 North Washington, Stillwater, OK, at 2 p.m. Saturday, January 3, 2009, directed by Palmer-Marler-Carberry Funeral Home, with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens, south of Stillwater.
