Memorial services for Edwin Klahs Brooks will be held at 10 am Saturday, March 7, 2009 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home in Stillwater. Brooks passed away February 6, 2009 at his home in Stillwater. Burial of cremains will be at 3:00 pm at the Czechoslovakian Cemetery in Caldwell, Kansas. Services are under the direction of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, Stillwater.
Ed Brooks was born Feb. 13, 1934 at Lamont, OK, the only child of Edwin Leroy and Anna (Bergman) Brooks. He graduated from Lamont High School in 1952 and attended Oklahoma A & M before being drafted into the Army in 1953. From 1953 to 1955 he was stationed at Hanau, Frankfurt, Germany.
On Sept. 3, 1955 he married Arlene Jo Dvoracek at Medford, OK. The couple made their home in Stillwater for a short time before moving to a farm east of Morrison in 1958. Brooks farmed and worked in the oil fields and in construction. In 1965 he began a dairy farm operation and continued until 1981.
He was an avid supporter of 4-H, FFA and other community activities. He was a member and past commander of American Legion Post 343, was named an Honorary State Farmer and received the Young Cooperator Award from the Oklahoma Milk Producers Association. After leaving the farm, he was involved in area businesses and in 1992 moved to Stillwater.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; three daughters, Debra Conkling and Mark Conkling of Clinton, OK, Dana Whitson and Jack Sweeny of Stillwater, and Denise Brooks and Mark Glaze of Morrison; three grandchildren Gavin and Aaron Conkling of Clinton and Kinzi Whitson of Stillwater; one step-grandson, Levi Sweeny of Stillwater; one aunt, Elizabeth Bergman of Blackwell, OK; two step-sisters, Joquita Wallen of Ponca City and Joyce Courtney of Blackwell and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother, Glenna Mae Brooks.
Memorial donations may be made in his name to the Morrison Community Development Association or the Czechoslovakian Cemetery of Caldwell, Kansas, c/o Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
