Eileen “Nadeen” Barrett passed away July 9, 2021 at the age of 87 and, as she would say, “and 3-quarters”. There will be graveside services at Fairlawn Cemetery July 12, 2021 Stillwater, Oklahoma which are entrusted to the Dighton-Marler Funeral Home.
Nadeen was born August 2, 1933, to Vannah Douglas Harris and Verna Kerby Harris at their home just south of Glencoe. She maintained her ties to Glencoe throughout her life.
At 15 years of age, while working at Stillwater’s Grand Café of the Grand Hotel, she met the love of her life, Frederick Clay Barrett, as he, by chance, stepped in for a coffee break. They married August 5, 1949, first living on Leigh Street then moving their family of 4 to what became the couple’s last home “which grew and grew and grew” as updates, additions and storage buildings were added by their own hands to their property just northwest of Stillwater. They were a hard-working team throughout their 50-year marriage until his death in 2000. She truly was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
Though she dropped out of high school and began full-time work, she believed in education, was an avid reader, and a lifelong learner. After raising her children, she attended what is now Meridian Technology Center gaining her GED then continuing with the Center completing their secretarial and bookkeeping offerings.
Her outside-the-home positions while her children were in public school included assisting the schools as a substitute school cook. She was instrumental with her husband in gaining the water district for the north end of town being the bookkeeper, assisting her husband with the meter readings and then the billings for decades. After raising her children her positions included being a salesperson for Sears and Beales Department Stores, Metering mail at the Oklahoma State University Post Office, and years of handling secretarial and payroll responsibilities in various departments of Oklahoma State University Food Services prior to her retirement.
She shared a love of the out of doors with Fred through years of tent camping with their immediate family and then years of RV camping with her brothers and sisters as well as friends often including their grandsons in many of the adventures.
She is preceded in death by her husband; her son, Charles Frederick Barrett; her parents; five of her six Harris brothers: Harold Douglas, Maxwell “Miron”, Sherman “Wayne”, Dale Gene and Loren Clinton (who died as an infant) as well as one of her two sisters, Mary “Maxine” Harris Mitchell.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanne Marie Barrett; her grandchildren, David “Clay” (Marga) Barrett and Jerod Joseph Barrett; great-grandson, Xavier Luke Barrett all of Stillwater; brother, Keith Kerby (Hopper) Harris of Wichita, Kansas; sister, Vivian “Arlene” Harris Smales of Florida, and numerous nephews and nieces.
