Evelyn Jean Chesnutt

October 8, 1936 — April 14, 2015

Evelyn Jean Chesnutt, 78, of Perry passed from this life on April 14, 2015. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a service celebrating her life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Perry on Friday, April 17, 2015 at 1:30pm. Public visitation will be held on Thursday, April 16, 2015 from 9am to 8pm and the family will greet friends at the funeral home from 5pm to 7 pm Thursday evening. Evelyn was born on October 8, 1936 in Perry, OK to James Henry and Mary Agnes (O"Donnell) Johnson. She was raised in Sumner, OK and graduated from Sumner High School"s Class of 1954. Following high school, Evelyn attended business school in Oklahoma City where she also worked for LeeWay Trucking. Evelyn moved back to Perry where she raised her children and worked for several years in the insurance companies. In 1976, she began working at Ditch Witch in Perry where she worked for 10 years doing secretarial work. Evelyn married Harold Chesnutt and they spent their retirement years traveling with their 5th wheel all over the United States and Canada until Harold passed away in 1989. The cornerstones of Evelyn Chesnutt"s life were her love of family and her devotion to Jesus Christ. She joined First Baptist Church in Perry on July 24, 1960, and was an active member for 55 years, all of her adult life. She was actively involved with planning and teaching of crafts for Vacation Bible School, worked in the church nursery and church library, cooked for church's Wednesday evening meals once to twice per month and Falls Creek Youth camp, she sang in the choir, assisted in the counting of offering, and hosted numerous Bible studies in her home. Evelyn"s sweet demeanor and kind heart made it easy for her to make friends. She enjoyed gardening, having her friends over to play dominos and card games and working on craft projects. Evelyn loved to crochet and attend craft shows. She was an Inspector for the Noble County Election Board, volunteered at the Noble County Fair, and served as treasurer for a local dancing club. Evelyn loved making life interesting and she went out of her way to make others smile. She played many light hearted pranks on her grandchildren, such as giving them their birthday money in the form of a 6 foot check or all in pennies. Evelyn was made to be a grandma and she was never happier than when she was surrounded by her grandkids and great grandkids or "adopted" grandchildren. Evelyn Chesnutt was a loving mother, a caring sister, a proud grandmother, a dedicated Christian, and a loyal friend and she will be deeply missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents: Jim and Mary Johnson, her husband Harold Chesnutt, a sister Anna Jane Lesh, and a sister-in-law Louise Johnson. She is survived by her brother, Tommy Johnson and sister, Elane Johnson; children: Bill Buffington and wife Kathy of Edmond, OK and Vickie Kroll and husband Dennis of League City, TX; 8 grandchildren: Matthew Kroll, Amanda Chipman and husband Nick, Kristen Jones and husband Rob, Chad Buffington, Seth Buffington, Brent Buffington, Sean Buffington, and Brooke Buffington; 5 great grandchildren: Willow Jones, Hazel Jones, Judah Jones, Carley Chipman, and Alissa Chipman. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members. The family asks that donations be made in Evelyn"s name to First Baptist Church in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, 203 Fir Street Perry, OK 73077.
