Evelyn Pate-Thomas-Stamper was born on April 15th, 1920, to Sam and Ova (Barker) Sumpter in Apache, Oklahoma. She spent her youth in that area and also some time in Lawton. She then married Lois Franklin L.F. Pate on September 11th, 1937 and they made their home in Cement, Oklahoma. The family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1960. Mr. Pate passed away in 1975. Evelyn then married John Thomas in October of 1981. Mr. Thomas passed away in 1991. After his passing, Evelyn married Harold Stamper on December 14th, 1995 and the couple has been together since.
Evelyn was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Stillwater. She and her husband were also very active with the nutrition center of Project Heart where she frequently delivered Meals on Wheels. She loved flowers and thoroughly enjoyed doing yard work. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She is described as being a very hard-working woman that was always very helpful. Evelyn was always on the go and was always busy. She had an intense love for her family and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved to travel and spent quite a lot of time out of the country visiting England and Egypt. She loved taking trips to Branson and enjoyed music and dancing. She is remembered as being tender-hearted and assisting anyone who was in need.
Evelyn passed away on January 19th, 2006 at her home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and one son-in-law, Jim Base. She is survived by 3 children; Peggy Base of Augusta, Kansas, Joan Johnson and husband Bill of Lindsay, Oklahoma and Frank Pate and wife Linda of Wichita, Kansas; 10 Grandchildren; Kim Harvey and husband David of Hembsy, England, Tim Base and wife Carol of Augusta, Kansas, Pat Base and wife Patty of Mt. Vernon, Missouri, Jo Lynne Williams of Enid, Oklahoma, Larry Johnson and wife Becky of Seabrook, Texas, Debbie Ezell and husband Gary of Lindsay, Oklahoma, Angie Clark and husband Jerry of Lindsay, Oklahoma, Scott Pate of Wichita, Kansas, Amy White and husband Danny of Douglass, Kansas, Aaron Jackson and wife Jenny of Pratt, Kansas; 1 brother, Tony Sumpter and wife Sue of Stillwater, Oklahoma; 2 sisters, Orpha Pursley of Prague, Oklahoma, Zelma Johnson of Stillwater, Oklahoma; 21 Great Grandchildren; 5 Great-Great Grandchildren; Several Nieces and Nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.
Services for Evelyn will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 27th at The Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home Chapel. The family has entrusted Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home with the arrangements. In Lieu of Flowers, the family request that donations be made to Project Heart, 312 W. 9th, Stillwater, OK. 74074.
