Love Conquers All, a motto lived out by Evelyn Ruth (Bergen) Burke for 88 years. Evelyn Burke of Stillwater, OK died September 12, 2014. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a celebration of her homecoming will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, September 16, 2014 at the First Christian Church of Stillwater, OK with Reverend Kathy Bryant officiating. Public visitation will be held on Monday, September 15, 2014 from 8 am to 8 pm at Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
Evelyn Burke was born November 8, 1925 in Clinton, OK. She was the oldest child of 10 born to George and Bertha Bergen. At the age of 12 Evelyn left home to work to help support her family during the great depression.
Evelyn Burke became a trained lieutenant in the Salvation Army and worked within the Oklahoma and Louisiana districts. On November 15, 1949 she was married to William L. Burke Sr., a captain in the Salvation Army
As a founding member of The University Nazarene Student Center on the campus of Oklahoma State University she faithfully served the spiritual needs of students from around the world. During her retirement years Evelyn attended the First Christian Church of Stillwater, actively participating in choir, womens circle, and Sunday school.
Evelyn volunteered within her community as a member of the Stillwater Morning Lions Club, the Stillwater Gideon Auxiliary and the Business Womens Club.
Evelyn was employed at Mercury Marine Manufacturing Plant, Braums Ice Cream Store, OSUs PBX, and Will Rogers Elementary School Cafeteria.
Evelyn is survived by her four children: William L. Burke, Jr. and wife Jane of Shawnee, OK; Charles L. Burke of Stillwater, OK; Stephen L. Burke and wife Giti of Stillwater, Ok and Elizabeth A. Burke of Tulsa, OK; Two sister, Verna Tinsely and Delores Hill; 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren
