Gary was born June 15, 1953, in Paus Valley, Oklahoma, the son of Billy Earl Robbins and Charlene (Arnold) Mickle. He spent his childhood in Lindsay but moved with his family to Ventura, California, at a young age when he was raised. He went to high school but earned his GED, then joined the United States Army, serving in the Vietnam War. After the army, he worked long hours in the oilfield industry, eventually becoming self-employed as a completion foreman, then later becoming an oil field consultant.

He met Brenda Knapp in a beauty shop in Lindsay, Oklahoma and they were married May 15, 1993, in the Erin Springs Baptist Church in Lindsay. The couple moved to Perry from Edgewood, NM in 2021. Although he was raised Baptist, after coming to Perry the couple began attending Perry Assembly of God Church.

Gary loved to cook, fish, hunt, watch old western and war movies and old-time country music. He also enjoyed traveling the world and going on short drives with his wife with whom together they loved to talk and laugh, sometimes for hours. He mostly loved being with family and his dog, whom he called Teddy Boy. He was known as a man who was a giving person who loved deeply, esteeming others higher than himself.
