Gary was born on March 1, 1954 in Hollywood, CA to Oda Loren and Mildred Pauline (Shields) Reid. At the age of 9, Garys family relocated to Stroud, OK where he graduated from Stroud High School. Following graduation, Gary worked a short time at the local IGA as a stocker. In the early 70s, Gary married Charlotte Chandler and in the late 70s they moved to Perkins where Gary began a career as a milk delivery drive for Gold Spot. The highlight of his time with Gold Spot was definitely delivering milk to all the sororities on the OSU campus.
Leaving his milk man days behind, Gary began a life-long career in the oil fields. He spent many years working as a pipeline operator for various oil companies such as: Bow Pipeline, Koch, and Teppco. After 25 years in the field, Gary retired to his home in Perkins where he opened two businesses: Sportee and Cimarron Shots. Several years later, after deciding that the oilfields couldnt make it without him, Gary returned to the oil pipeline as a measurement tech with Enterprise Petroleum in Cushing. Gary loved the oil patch and spent more than 30 years of his life working the pipelines. In 2009, Gary married his best friend Missy Garrett and spent 4 wonderful years together.
He took great pride in both his family and his work with his family always coming first. When Gary was not working, he enjoyed entertaining friends at his home and no trip to his house was complete without a meal of his famous smoked meats. He also enjoyed going to the casino, swimming, traveling to the lake, and talking about the oilfield.
Gary was a loving and generous man who always unselfishly put others needs before his own. He had a great sense of humor and a sharp wit and he rarely passed up a chance to make someone smile. He had a way of making everyone feel like family and all of his kids friends lovingly referred to him as hacksaw due to his great impression of Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Gary knew the value of hard work and he was a true mans man. Friends and family alike knew that they could get honest advice from Gary due to his non-judgmental and caring spirit. He always taught his kids that everyone makes mistakes, but as long as you were man enough to face and learn from those mistakes, you were going to be okay. He was a man of great character and even during the hardest times in his life, he chose to be positive and never complained.
Gary was a loving husband, a supportive and protective father, a proud grandfather, a dedicated employee and a loyal friend. He will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him and his legacy of selflessness and compassion will live on through the lives of his children and grandchildren.
Gary is preceded in death by his loving parents, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his loving wife Missy of the home; children, Clay Reid of Perkins, OK, James Arthur Reid, Sr. and wife Angela of Jones, OK, Craig Reid and wife Frankie of Stillwater, OK, Kristen Anderson and husband Craig of Tryon, OK and Stephanie Warrad and her husband, Omar of Houston, TX; step daughter, Kandyce Luchey and her husband, Chris, and Makeyla Albers; Siblings, Shirley Jean Dunlap Watkins, Vera Elaine Dunlap Mumbower, Sharon Adele Dunlap Lynch, and Patricia Mae Dunlap Myron. 9 grandchildren, James Arthur Reid Jr., Amber Smith, Jessica Reid, Austin Reid, Codi Reid, Carly Jo Reid, Ali Warrad, Laila Warrad, and Liali Warrad; and one step granddaughter, Kaylinn Carter.
