Genevieve Snyder

February 27, 1929 — July 6, 2019

Genevieve Snyder, 90, passed away on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at her home in Glencoe. Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 9am-5pm and on Wednesday from 9am-8pm with family greeting guests from 6-8pm with sandwiches and other light refreshments at Dighton Marler Funeral Home in Stillwater. Graveside service will be held on Thursday, July 11 at 10:00am at Sunset Memorial Garden Cemetery in Stillwater. Dighton Marler Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Genevieve was born on February 27, 1929 to William and Ethel (Mitchell) Hesser in Glencoe, Oklahoma. At the age of 15 she caught the train to Stillwater, got a waitress job, a room at the boarding house, and thus started her grown-up life. She worked hard and long hours at the café, but made good tips, which helped her to by the things she needed.
Sometime after that she started writing a young soldier that she knew serving in the army overseas during WWII. Unfortunately for him he sent a picture of his friend. She started writing him and before long she was writing only him, his name was Orin Snyder. When he came home, they dated, she told her mom she believed he could make a good living for her. They were married in 1947, and in 1949 had a daughter, Karen.
Genevieve worked hard at whatever she did, staying in bed several months before having Karen, taking care of the bills and being very frugal with the money. She worked right along side Orin on the farm. In 1954 they purchased a farm 5 miles west of Stillwater, they both worked the dairy and farmed the land.
She did accomplish two things in her life that I found quite remarkable. When I grew up and left home, mom started dealing in antiques. She had a shop in the now unused barn. Mom proved to be a very good saleslady. They sold antiques for many years, and using their antiques money only, they traveled to 23 islands and 17 countries.
The other thing that happened I always thought of as a God thing. When she was 6, she met the little girl that lived just a short distance away, she was 7. They became fast friends. Throughout school, dating, marrying, having children, growing older, losing husbands, they have remained closest of friends. Today only her best friend remains, and still loyal to Mom. Her name is Nola Ellington. She has always been a friend and a blessing to me, and I love her very much.
As many people know, mom’s personality and mine clashed, but god gave me her, and I am pretty sure he knew what he was doing. I, her husband, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren friends and family all loved her. And best of all God loved her. She had a dream of her friend Nola and she walking hand in hand in a meadow with beautiful flowers. God has a lot to do with our lives, he had his hand in her life.
If you do not know Jesus Christ as your savior, please find someone to lead you to him. You too will want to walk through that meadow.
