George Robert Johnson died Monday, October 6, 2014 at Perry Memorial Hospital in Perry, OK from pneumonia. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and the family will gather to celebrate his life at a later date.
George was born in Okemah, OK on July 22, 1925 and was the son of Claud E. Johnson and Winnie Ann Goad Johnson. The family moved to Oklahoma City in 1930 where he attended Harding Junior High School and graduated from Classen High School in 1943. He attended Oklahoma University and joined the Naval ROTC while in college. He graduated from OU with a Chemical Engineering Degree and as a 1st Lieutenant in the Navy.
After serving in the Navy during World War II, he went to work for Phillips Petroleum Company in Borger, TX, in 1948. That same year he married Minnie Marie Wester, and they lived in Borger and Phillips, TX, with their daughter and son for the next 15 years. In 1963, the family moved to Bartlesville, OK, where he continued to work for Phillips Petroleum Company. In 1967 he was transferred to Phillips Fibers in Greenville, SC, where he retired in the late 1980s as Manager of Corporate Development.
Following his retirement, George and Marie moved to Edisto Beach, SC. They were active in the Edisto Island United Methodist Church. In the late 1990s, George and Marie moved to Green Valley,AZ, to get a taste of desert living and in 2000, due to health reasons, they moved to Stillwater, OK.
No matter where George resided through the years, he loved to play bridge and golf. There is no doubt that it had not been for back surgery several years ago that kept him off the course, his golf scores would have been lower than his age. George is survived by his wife M. Marie of Stillwater, daughter Marti Gay Johnson also of Stillwater, son Robert William Johnson, and granddaughter Jennifer Lindsay Johnson of Greenville, SC, sister Joan Bake of Oklahoma City, and several nieces and a nephew.
Donations can be made in Georges name to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
