Gilbert Noel Gib Hines, 75-year-old Stillwater resident, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009 in Oklahoma City.
Gib was born on July 28, 1933 in Snyder, Oklahoma, the eldest child of Elvin Dewey Duke and Opal (Belew) Hines. He was a 1951 graduate of Tipton High School and later attended Oklahoma A&M College. Gib married his high school sweetheart Gay Ruth Elsener on January 8, 1956 in Tipton, Oklahoma. They made their home in Stillwater. They were married 52 and one-half years until her death on August 29, 2008. Together they raised five children.
Gib served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he was honorably discharged on November 23, 1955 with the rank of Sgt. During his time in the service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and the Korean Service Medal. During his career he worked for the Earnest Brothers Shoe Store, Simpson Pontiac and the Payne County Assessors Office. He later owned and operated Smith Electric for a short time and later worked for the Lee Company for 25 years in the residential and commercial sales area, retiring in November, 1999. Gib was a member of the Highland Park United Methodist Church. He was a member of the American Legion, having served as post commander. He was also a member of the Noon Lions Club, having served as President. Gib loved to hunt, fish and play golf. He most enjoyed the time spent with his family and adored each and every one of his wonderful grandchildren.
He is survived by his five children: Gary Lynn Hines and wife Janet of Stillwater; Greg Allen Hines and wife Lisa of Claremore; Grant Warren Hines and wife Rena of Stillwater; Brenda Gail Zacharias and husband Kevin of Stillwater; Beverly Gay Williams and husband Duane of Oklahoma City. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Elizabeth Elsener of Altus and Joan Elsener of Stillwater, and brother-in-law C. A. Gough of Oklahoma City. He is also loved and will be missed by his ten grandchildren: Garrett Hines; Blaire and Wendy Hines; Gage Hines; Kristen, Kate and Brett Zacharias; Broderick Williams; and step-grandchildren C. J. and Craig Phillips. He is also survived by thirteen nieces and nephews and a host of other family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gay, parents Duke and Opal Hines, sister Mary Hines Cross, brothers-in-law W.A., Gordon and Fred Elsener, sisters-in-law Lois Elsener and Fern Gough.
Funeral services for will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, March 9, 2009, at Highland Park United Methodist Church in Stillwater with Reverend Derrek Belase officiating. Visitation will occur at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home on Sunday, March 8, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Life Adult Day Center, Attn: Jane Carlson, 411 W.
