Hazel was the eldest of 6 children born to Frank and Nellie Mackey. Leaving Sayre, the family moved to a farm near Durham where Hazel started school. Later they moved to a farm near Kingfisher when Hazel was in high school where she proudly played on their championship basketball team for four years.
Hazel enrolled at OSU in 1940 and met Dean McCrary in 1941. They were married March 14, 1943 prior to Deans deployment to North Africa during World War II. Hazel worked at Tinker Field for the war effort until Dean returned. After returning to college she graduated with a Home Economics degree in 1947.
Following a year in Omega where their daughter Ladean was born, Dean and Hazel returned to OSU. In 1952 their son Frank was born and, soon thereafter, the family went to Ethiopia as part of the OSU Point 4 Program for 4 years. After returning to the United States the family moved to Kentucky for Dean to complete his doctoral work. In 1961 the family moved overseas again when Dean accepted a teaching position at the American University of Beirut. In 1965 Hazel and Dean adopted a daughter Atina. After living in Lebanon for 14 years, Dean, Hazel, and Atina relocated to Washington D.C. where they lived until Deans death in 1982.
After moving back to Stillwater in 1987 Hazel devoted her time to her family and pursuing her many interests including reading, sewing, gardening, and keeping up with world events.
Preceding her in death were her parents, sister Mary Jane Schemmer, brother Carl Mackey, husband Dean McCrary, and daughter Vergie Nell.
