Formerly residing at Golden Oaks Village of Stillwater, Esther Jean Iris Thompson Reed, 85, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011, at Stillwater Medical Center.
Services will be for immediate family only on Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Palmer-Marler Carberry Funeral Home, which is handling cremation arrangements.

Esther Jean Iris Thompson was born Oct. 11, 1926, in Danville, Ill., to Harry and Ruth Thompson. She moved to Urbana, Ill., at the age of 18 months, graduating from Urbana High School in 1944. Thompson attended the University of Illinois from 1944-1948, receiving a bachelors degree in home economics. She met Robert M. Bob Reed while in college, and they were married at the Wesley Foundation on June 19, 1948. Bob was a professor of agronomy at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Okla., teaching the beginning soils class, among others, for 37 years. He is currently a resident at Golden Oaks Village of Stillwater.
Jean was active in Girl Scouts for seven years starting in 1956, along with PTA, Agronomy Wives and many of her daughters activities, e.g. dance, choir and band. She briefly worked for Western Mechanical Plumbing. Her favorite hobby was to play bridge, and, at one time, she was active in five bridge clubs.
Bob and Jean liked to travel. They made numerous trips to New York to visit their daughter Julie and also took trips to Hawaii and Australia. Jean was an animal lover and her favorite pet was a dog named Ginger that always went on family vacations with them. She loved to cook sweets and a favorite were her homemade caramels at Christmas time.
Survivors include husband, Robert M. Reed of Golden Oaks in Stillwater; daughter Mary Reed of Addison, Texas, a retiree of Eastman Chemical Co. in Longview, Texas; the Bells of Charlotte, N.C. daughter Julie Reed Bell, a news researcher for the Associated Press, her husband Adam Bell, a reporter for The Charlotte Observer, and their children, 15-year-old Jordan and 11-year-old Lauren; daughter Barbara Bates and her husband Phil Bates of Bartlesville, Okla., retirees of ConocoPhillips; grandson Chad Bates, a video production assistant at ESPN in Farmington, Conn.; and granddaughter Jessie Bates Wilson, a land assistant at Chesapeake Energy, and her husband Tyler Wilson, an accountant at Hertz, of Oklahoma City.
