Laurie May Schlobohm

May 28, 1919 — March 7, 2024

Laurie May Schlobohm, beloved teacher and community servant, passed away on March 7th in Stillwater, OK, just a couple months shy of her 105th birthday. Born on May 28, 1919, in Climax, Kansas, she graduated from the College of Emporia in 1941 and embarked on a distinguished teaching career, touching lives in Reading, Osage City, and beyond until retiring in 1981. Laurie married George Charles Schlobohm in 1942, with whom she shared four children: Bill, Sally, Charles, and the late Alan. Her commitment to education extended into her retirement, volunteering two decades with Kansas Womens prison ministries. Laurie’s numerous accolades include being named Volunteer of the Year in 1989, presidency of the Kansas Speech Teachers Association, and induction into both the Kansas State Activities Association Hall of Fame and the Kansas State Teacher’s Hall of Fame. Laurie was a devout member of the United Methodist Church of Reading, a 50 plus year member of Eastern Star, and a senator in the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature. Laurie, lovingly called Schlo by her students, left a legacy that continues to inspire through her of love of education and service. She is survived by 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild, all of whom carry forward her enduring legacy of kindness and dedication. No words can express our family’s appreciation for the love and care she received in her 13 years of residency at Golden Oaks. A memorial service will be held on her 105th birthday, May 28, 2024, at 11:00am at Reading Cemetery in Reading, Kansas. A light lunch will be held after the graveside at the Methodist Church in Reading.
