Lloyd Neal Salsman, 74, went to be with his heavenly Father on Friday, May 10, 2024. He was born on October 15, 1949, in El Reno, OK to Norbert and Margaret Salsman.
Lloyd graduated from El Reno High School in 1967 and then enrolled at Oklahoma State University at the age of 18. While obtaining his Bachelors and Masters in Electrical Engineering, he worked part-time at the OSU Computer Center. He became an expert at operating and maintaining the IBM 360 mainframe computer and developed critical software utilities.
His expertise impressed the IBM engineers and they tried to recruit him to their Armonk Research Center in New York. Instead, he began working for INEN, a Stillwater company founded by Bill Hughes and Bob Overton, Sr. This company produced induction heating equipment used all over the world. Lloyd developed the induction heaters that enabled the building of the Alaskan pipeline. Lloyd then joined his friend and mentor, Ed Shreve, working for SETAC, a high technology defense contractor where he worked on the next generation anti-radiation missile system as well as many other classified projects. Lloyd continued this work at Flight Systems where he also developed advanced electronic warfare and radar systems. Lloyd later went on to join Nomadics where he worked on sensors and detectors for the Department of Homeland Security and also developed environmental sensors under contract to General Electric. Lloyd rejoined Ed Shreve at Frontier Engineering which has evolved into Frontier Electronic Systems Corporation where he worked until his recent illness.
Lloyd set the standard for engineers. He was an exceptionally gifted designer who understood the theory and mathematics at a deep level, with a practical nature of application. Lloyd would routinely get calls from colleagues around the world soliciting advice on complex problems. He was equally comfortable running a lathe and milling machine as well as coding software or welding exotic metals.
Lloyd is survived by his wife, Tamara Overton Salsman, of the home; stepson, Robert Ellis and granddaughter, Izabella Ellis; his brother, Larry Salsman and his wife, Nancy Salsman and their children, Bryan Salsman and Amy Stout and their children, Tanner Stout, Madyson Stout, and Rachel Julien; and his Aunt Marie Stover. Lloyd was also considered a very dear member of the R.L. Overton family.
Services for Lloyd N. Salsman will be on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Dighton Marler Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater, OK.
