Sally was born March 25, 1921 in Payne County, OK, to Oles and Maude (Knott) Cullers. Oles and Maude had gone on a spring fishing trip to a neighbor’s farm pond when Maude went in to early labor. Lucile was born that day, weighing in at 4lbs. The Doctor on call said the baby was born too premature and would not survive. Lucile’s grandfather took the tiny baby and wrapped her in his coat and held her over the wood stove. This rest is history. She was the eldest child of 4.
She married Melvin Wesley Murphy in 1939 in Stillwater, OK. They were blessed with two wonderful children, Roger and Carolyn.
“Sally” was a people person. She loved to tell stories, visit and host garden parties. She was an avid baker and homemaker. She enjoyed decorating, sewing, woodworking and antiquing. Sally loved collecting heirloom pieces to share with her family and the younger generations. A dedicated Methodist, she was a member of the First Methodist Church both in Ponca City and Stillwater. She was an avid gardener with a green thumb. She especially enjoyed day lilies and African violets. Sally retired from Conoco in Ponca City with over 34 years service. An active civic member, she was honored for her work with the Shriners for the children’s hospital. She also enjoyed acting as a tour guide for the Marland Mansion Estate and volunteered on the election board.
She was preceded in death by husband, Melvin Wesley Murphy; one brother, Oles Cullers Jr.; two sisters, Josephine Lowe and Margie Lute; and her parents.
Survivors include one son, Roger Murphy and wife Judy; one daughter, Carolyn Reedy and husband Argene; 5 grandchildren: Scott Murphy (Melissa), Chris Murphy, Wesley Reedy (Kim), Andrea Reedy Shaw (Brandon) and Alan Reedy (Jamie).
