Martha Louise McElwain, 87, passed from this life on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at Primrose Retirement Community. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Stillwater. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am Friday, December 19, 2014 at the First Christian Church in Stillwater, OK.
Marty (Farquhar) McElwain was born on September 28, 1927 to Charles Eberhart and Helen Gould (Wood) Farquhar in New Eagle, Pennsylvania. She grew up in the New Eagle and McKeesport area. She attended high school in McKeesport and graduated in 1945. After high school, Marty received her certification in nursing. She moved to Galveston, Texas to work at a local hospital. In 1951, Marty met Keith, the love of her life, and married that same year. They joined in matrimony on October 18, 1951 in their future home in Stillwater. Later in life, she continued her education and received a bachelors degree from the University of Central Oklahoma and had top honors in her class. Keith and Marty celebrated 63 loving years together.
Marty was very devoted to her family, especially her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was a very efficient and organized woman when it came to work and family. Marty was very active and had many hobbies throughout her life. She was an avid golfer, bowler, and loved to swim. She was a thoughtful, supportive, and appreciative woman, which made her the perfect wife, mother, and grandmother. Those traits also allowed her to excel in the nursing field.
Marty was an amazing woman, wife, mother, and grandmother. She will be deeply missed by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Eberhart and Helen Gould (Wood) Farquhar; one daughter, Jill McElwain; one brother, Jerry Farquhar; one sister, Mary Farquhar. Martha is survived by her husband, Keith McElwain of the home; two children, Kris Russell of Stillwater, Kurt McElwain of Amarillo, TX; one sister, Rhoda Farquhar; thirteen grandchildren; and thirteen great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Martys name to the Alzheimers Association in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, 5106 North Washington, Stillwater, OK 74075.
