Marvin Cooks

Marvin Cooks Sr. was born on April 2nd, 1937 to Boston and Carrie (Childs) Cooks in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. He attended school in Okmulgee and graduated from Dunbar High School. He then went on to obtain a Bachelors Degree from Langston University. Marvin was united in marriage to Ida Bolden on June 6th, 1957. The family resided in Wyoming for about 16 years, then moving to Alexandria, Virginia and from there to Ohio for 15 years. Marvin and his family made their home in Stillwater where they have resided for the past 20 years.
Marvin was employed as a loan specialist for the USDA until his retirement in January of 2006. He enjoyed talking to friends and family members and was the type of man that never met a stranger. He liked to watch westerns and loved to travel. He also enjoyed watching his favorite cartoons, Fog Horn, Leg Horn and the Wiley Coyote. He was a very giving man, doing all that he could to better his community and anyone who was in need. He loved spending time with his family and especially enjoyed his grandchildren. His family remembers him using his favorite saying, It always starts from the neck up. He loved his church and had a great love for the Lord. Marvin was a former member of the Jaycees and a current member of the Pride of Stillwater Masonic Lodge # 238. He was a 32nd degree Mason with the Northwestern Consistory # 84 in Guthrie and was also a 33rd degree Grand Inspector General Mason. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, Amaranthus Chapter # 95. He had also served as a Deacon of the Greater Faith Baptist Church.
Marvin passed away on Thursday May 11th, 2006 at Stillwater Medical Center. He was 69 years of age. He is survived by his wife, Ida B. of the home; seven children, Sharon Clement of Atlanta, GA., Marvin Cooks Jr. and wife Janice of Columbus, Ohio, Yolanda A. Cooks and friend Walter of Columbus, Ohio, Elnetta L. Cooks-Jones and husband Jerome of Columbus, Ohio, Harriett Y. Cooks- Marshall and husband Curtis of Columbus, Ohio, Maurice Cooks and friend Lisa Stucks of Broken Arrow, OK., Carrie M. Cooks-Simpson and husband Darrell of Dallas, TX.; 10 grandchildren, Jessica Cooks, Ivorie Cooks, Chandra Cooks, Krista Turner, Kiarra Simpson, Alex Cooks, Danielle Jones, Stephanie Cooks, Darrell Simpson II, Ashleigh Jones; 2 Brothers, Richard Cooks and wife Lenova of Okmulgee, OK. and Curtis Cooks of Tulsa, OK.; One Sister, Bobbie Jo Cooks of Denver, CO.; several Nieces, Nephews and cousins, other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his Parents and two Sisters, Ophalia Cooks and Opal M. Cooks.
Services for Marvin Cooks will be held on Wednesday May 17th at 10:00 a.m. at Sunnybrook Christian Church. Rev. Frankie Humphrey, Rev. Calvin Miller, Rev. Oscar Adams and Rev. Imogene Murray will be officiating. Visitation will be held Saturday through Tuesday at Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home.
