Mary Ellen Goforth

October 26, 1934 — May 7, 2017

Mary Goforth, 82, passed from this life on May 7th, 2017 at Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mary was born on October 26, 1934 in Enid, Oklahoma to Chester M. and Lila L. Carver. She attended Homestead High School where she was a member of the girl"s basketball team. Mary graduated from high school in 1952 and went to work for the County Agricultural Management Office out of Watonga, Oklahoma. During her employment here, she became engaged to and married Gayle D. Goforth. After getting married, she moved with Gayle to Wewoka, Oklahoma, and worked for the County Assessor"s Office. She remained at that position even after Gayle was transferred to Guthrie and she drove there every weekend to spend time with him. This arrangement soon worth thin on them both and Mary resigned from her position and joined her husband in Guthrie. They set up house there and went about the business of being young and married. They eventually moved to Perry and began the process of adopting two children, Michael and Mindy Goforth. Mary was a wonderful wife and mother who greatly loved her family and enjoyed staying home with them. She took great care of her family, always putting their needs before her own. Later in life she again became a mother when she and Gayle adopted a second son, Christopher "Alex" Goforth. Mary had many different hobbies throughout her life. She enjoyed working with her hands and at one point she was heavily involved in needlepoint and other needlework activities, such as cross-stitch and embroidery. She was also a gifted seamstress, making clothing for her family and others who sought out her talents and gifts. Later in life, Mary turned to woodworking as her creative outlet, following in the footsteps of her late father, Chester Carver, who had been a carpenter. Mary was a long time member of the non-denominational Women"s Quilting Group and she enjoyed making beautiful prayer quilts for others. Mary was proceeded in death by her parents Chester M. and Lila L. Carver. Mary is survived by her husband, Gayle D. Goforth, of the home; one brother, Robert Carver and wife Ruthie, of Granbury, TX; three children, Mike Goforth and wife Sharla, of Perry; Mindy Goforth of Oklahoma City; Alex Goforth, of Perry; four grandchildren, Donovan Brown, JaLeesa Brown, Jameson Brown, Hannah Mullins; one great-grandchild, Donovan Brown; and several beloved Nieces and Nephews.
