Funeral services for Merlyn Edith Sherwood, 90, of Stillwater will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, January 16, 2008 at the East Sheen Cemetery Chapel with burial to follow at East Sheen Cemetery in Richmond, England. Services are under the direction of Palmer Marler Funeral Home.
Merlyn was born on September 20, 1918 in Madras, India to William Russell and Florence Hilda (Duncan) Green. She attended Bishop Cotton Girls High School in Bangalore. She attended the University of Madras where she graduated with a BA degree in August of 1938. She was accepted to study for the Ph.D. in Mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, and traveled from India to the United Kingdom (her first trip out of India) by sea in 1939 to start her studies. She married Denis William Sherwood on December 2, 1939 and gave up her chance for the safety of a Ph.D. for the dangers of London in the blitz. She served in the war effort throughout WWII, working in Central London for the War Office. She was nearly killed by bombing on a number of occasions.
Her only child, Peter Miles Anson Sherwood was born on July 12, 1945. She home schooled Peter for two years (1954 1956) and shared his interests in medieval church architecture, visiting many old churches together. She was a great conversationalist who had a very good knowledge of world events. Her husband, Denis, died on July 3, 1989. After his death, she traveled widely including trips to China, Portugal, Russia, Petra, and the Pyramids. Merlyn (known as Meg) came to live in Stillwater on December 31, 2004 and died in Grace Living Center on Wednesday, January 7, 2009. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed by the small Sherwood family of Peter and Gillian Sherwood.
