Meryl Evelyn Cundiff, 86, of Perkins, passed from this life on March 16, 2012, surrounded by her family. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Perkins and will be held at 10:30am on Monday, March 19, 2012 at Immanuel Baptist Church in Perkins. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 2pm to 4pm at the funeral home located at 304 N. Main in Perkins.
Meryl was born on September 6, 1925 in Melbourne, Australia to Fredrick Charles Peebles and Emma Dunford. She was raised in the Melbourne area, graduating at 16 yrs old from Pahran Tech. High School in 1941. She spent several years working for the Webb Newspaper Agency. In the early 1940s, she met an American soldier stationed in Australia. In 1945, she married Nelson A. Cundiff. This marriage would last for more than 53 yrs and produced four loving children.
Shortly after their marriage, Meryl boarded a boat and traveled for 3 weeks to the United States to settle in Perkins, OK with Nelson. Meryl spent her entire adult life in the Perkins area. She spent many years working as a wife and mother. After raising her four children, Meryl went to work for the Perkins-Tryon Public Schools, eventually working up to the manager of cafeteria operations. She retired after more than 18 years of service.
Meryl was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She can best be described as honest, brave, and courageous. Meryl was an unselfish friend and mother, always putting the needs of her children and grandchildren before her own. She was kind, selfless, and enjoyed taking care of others. She will be remembered for her generosity and ability to make others feel like the most important person in the room. Meryl was a loving mother, a caring wife, a proud grandmother and great grandmother, and a loyal friend. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the community she served.
Meryl Cundiff is survived by her 4 children: Judy Spillars and husband Frank, of Perkins, Jennifer Holly and husband Hugh (Scott), of Tulsa. James Cundiff of Tulsa, and Merilyn Cundiff of Wellston. 9 grandchildren: Micheal Spillars, Jeff Spillars, Rachelle Ninke, Stephanie Hill, Emily Dahlgren, Chet Duncan, Nick Duncan, Scott Harris, and Tim Harris. She is also survived by 17 great grandchildren.
Meryl was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nelson A. Cundiff, and four Sisters: May Currie, Gwen Barlow, Jean Radeker, and Daphne Deayton.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made to Image Hospice, in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home, 5106 N. Washington. Stillwater, OK 74075.
