Nancy Pappas

Nancy Pappas, 86, of Stillwater went to be with the Lord on June 17, 2012 in Harrah, OK.

Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral home and will be held at 10:00am Friday, June 22, 2012 at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home Chapel at 5106 N.Washington in Stillwater, OK. Public visitation will be held from 8am-8pm on Thursday, June 21, 2012

Mary Nancy Owen Pappas was born May 21, 1926 in Little Rock, AR, the only daughter of Carruth Owen and Lulu Hellums Owen. Her father was an insurance executive so she grew up having lived all over the United States, including Pine Bluff, AR; Forest Hills, NY; Atlanta, GA; Alexandria, LA; and Kansas City, KS. She graduated high school from Classen High School, Oklahoma City, OK. She graduated from Lindenwood College and attended the University of Missouri. While in college, she met the love of her life, Pete C. Pappas who also attended the University of Missouri. She made many life-long friendships from her college years, especially Jim and Jean Wilbur. She married Pete on August 12, 1950. Their early marriage was very full with work and family. The first two years of her married life were spent in Indianapolis, Indiana while Pete was serving in the Army during the Korean War. After Pete finished his Army service, he and Nancy moved to Kansas City. There they started a family and bought their first home. They had four children Laurie Suzan Pappas, Glenn Owen Pappas, Lisa Pappas, and Tom Pappas. Lisa was born with a defective heart and most of Nancys time was spent caring for her family, particularly Lisa and taking Lisa for medical stays at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. Lisa passed away in March of 1963. The family moved to Kirkwood, MO and lived there until the Spring of 1966 when they came to Stillwater, OK. Nancy has lived there until shortly before her death on June 17, 2012.
Nancy was a loving mother, devoted wife and loyal friend who wore many different hats for Pete and the kids. In Indianapolis and Kansas City, she worked for Greybar Electric. In St. Louis and Stillwater, she served at various times as a Girl Scout leader, Den Leader and officer and head timer for the Stillwater Aquatic Club. For a period of time, she was the bookkeeper for the NAPA stores Pete owned. Nancy was a lifelong Methodist and attended First United Methodist Church of Stillwater until her health deteriorated.
Additionally, Nancy had a keen interest in genealogy, family history and American history. She was widely read and had traced her roots back to Pre-Revolutionary War Scotland, England, Ireland and Italy. She was a lifelong member and served as an officer in the Daughters of the American Revolution, Cimarron Chapter; Chapter U of the P.E.O.; the Dames of Colonial America; and the Daughters of the Confederacy.
Nancy was a lifelong Republican who worked many years in Stillwater as a poll watcher. She served as a Bellmon Belle and was also an active volunteer in many of Governor Bartletts campaigns.
Nancy loved camping, water sports and family trips. As her kids got older, these interests were transferred to her grandkids and she had many precious memories of long summer days spent with the four older grandsons at the lake house outside of Bentonville, Arkansas. Nancy was a special person who gave generously of her time and had a special gift for listening to grieving and ailing people. Although her final months were difficult, she goes to a peaceful reunion with her husband Pete and daughter Lisa.
Nancy is survived by her three older children Laurie, Glenn and Tom and their spouses Charley, Deborah Scott and Michele; her grandchildren, Owen, Anthony, Jessica, Matt, Phillip , Alexandra, Daniel and Lillian; two great-grandchildren, Liam and Mia; her first cousin Mary Lou Johnson; her brother-in-law and his wife, Greg and Adrian Pappas; and her sister-in-law and her husband, Tenia and Alexis Christopoulos; as well as extended family and friends.
In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to The Girl Scouts of America or Judith Karman Hospice.
