Nathan “Bud” Payne was born December 2, 1935 in Sallisaw Oklahoma to Earl and Gladys (Harrison) Payne. Nathan grew up on the farm in Sallisaw and graduated from Sallisaw high school in 1955. After graduating high school he attended Tulsa Barber School which led him to Stillwater Oklahoma to pursue a career as a barber. While barbering at the Oklahoma State University Student union he met Margene (Tate) and in August of 1961 they were married for 27 years and raised three children Harold “Puddin” Payne, Jennifer (Payne) Nelson, Justin Payne.
Nathan founded Buds Barber shop on the Strip (Washington Street) in 1958 which remained his place of work full time right up to his passing at 83 years of age.
Over the years “Bud” provided haircuts to people of all walks of life, and as the barber shop gained popularity Bud provided haircuts to many hometown celebrities including “Big Country” OSU/Professional basketball star and even country music singer Garth Brooks had his hair cut at Buds Barber shop, and remained friends with Bud throughout his music career.
Buds barber shop wasn’t only known for the famous “flat top” haircut, but many cowboys came to Bud throughout the years to discuss anything and everything, but almost every conversation led back to horses somehow.
Nathan was an avid horse trainer, horse breeder and calf roper. Many people came to seek the advice and wisdom from the cowboy and even get personal training in Nathan Payne’s roping arena.
Nathan dedicated his life to teaching his children, grandchildren, and people from all over the world how to rope and ride.
Nathan maintained an honorable roping reputation himself winning a SPRA (Senior Pro Rodeo Association) saddle at the age of 69 in 2004, and his last belt buckle was won at the age of 77. However, he continued to teach and mold the minds of many cowboys right up to his passing.
Nathan will be missed by many cowboys, cowgirls, family and friends all over the world.
