Roberta Marguerite Letchworth

April 6, 1915 — April 18, 2014

Roberta M. Letchworth was born April 6, 1915 to Henry and Anna Kindschi on a farm west of Orlando. Mrs. Letchworth died on April 18, 2014 at the age of 99 following a year of residence at the Perry Memorial Hospital. She was the eldest of five children, Dale, Gordon, Harold Kindschi and Dorine See. All have preceded her in death. Roberta married James F. Letchworth in October 1938 in Orlando. After sixty-five years of marriage, James died in 2003. In 1940 they moved to the Letchworth family farm southeast of Covington and became members of the United Methodist Church in Lucien. They moved to Lucien in 1968. They had two children, James Robert and Lila Ann. Lila Ann died following a lengthy illness in 1988 and James R. and his partner Kirk Swanson live in San Antonio. Inaddition to her son, Roberta is survived by three grandchildren: Rodney McCaul and wife, Kristen of Perry, Gina Peterson and husband, Tony of Fort Worth and Alison Lamb and husband, Tim of Fort Worth. She also has five great grandchildren; Austin and Aubrey McCaul, Zackary and Levi Peterson and Brennan Lamb and one great great grandchild Noah Peterson. Roberta and James each had a deep religious faith. James would become a strong leader in every lay position in their church while Roberta would, as she described herself, "be his loyal supporter". Roberta would become active in women"s groups, Sunday school teacher, Bible School Teacher and other assorted church and community activities. In her writings Roberta stated "there were difficulies and problems but God was always our source of strength to get through them". In later years, Roberta was to become a care giver to her mother, mother-in-law, various aunts and friends. The illness of daughter, Lila Ann gave Roberta and James a second family, their grandchildren Gina, Rodney and Alison. Roberta also cared for her daughter during her ten year illness and then many years at home with James and while he was in a nursing home. Prior to marriage, Roberta attended A&M College, now Oklahoma State, and then taught for three years in rural schools west of Mulhall. Family responsibilities precluded her continuing in a teaching career but she was to use her training and abilities throughout her life in her quest to help others. A prolific reader throughout her life, Roberta recently donated over one thousand books to the Perry Carnegie Library for their book sales. A fund is being established at the Perry Carnegie Library to continue her reading legacy. This fund will support children"s reading programs teaching reading and the passion Roberta had for reading. Family visitation will be Friday, April 25, 2014 at the home of Rodney and Kristen McCaul, 806 Wakefield, Perry from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Lucien, Oklahoma on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 10:30 am with inurnment at the Enid Memorial Cemetery at 3:00 pm. Services have been entrusted in the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home of Perry. The family requests any donation be sent to the Perry Carnegie Library to support the Roberta M. Letchworth Reading Fund or to the United Methodist Church in Lucien, OK. Condolences may be sent to the family via an online guestbook at www.perrycares.com.
