Susan Louisa Eaton March 28, 1934 – February 14, 2025

Stillwater, OK – Susan Louisa Eaton, age 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 14th, 2025, in her home at Mockingbird Estates. Susan will be remembered for her love and humble service to family and friends, her amazing skills as a seamstress and her strong work ethic and desire to stay busy through retirement.

Born in Rolla, Missouri on March 28, 1934, Susan developed her life-long love for St. Louis Cardinal baseball as she grew up listening to games on the radio. She graduated from Rolla High School in 1952 and began her first career as a secretary. She would brag that she could type more than 100 words per minute on the old manual Royal typewriters. Susan married Richard Eaton in 1955. In the early 1960s the couple lived in New York City for three years and she worked as a legal secretary on Wall Street. When they returned to Oklahoma, they adopted two daughters, Christina Susan and Anne Marie. Susan poured her vast love into raising her daughters and was an active member of many Episcopal churches as she moved around Oklahoma.

In 1980 (then a single mother) she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Oklahoma State University. Anne and Chris remember how hard she worked to support the family; almost always working two or more jobs. She taught for several years, then worked at OSU until she retired in 1998. In retirement she was a regular usher at OSU sporting events. She did this for more than 25 years and only resigned her position in December 2024 when she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Susan leaves a legacy of beautiful hand-crafted items. In the 50s and 60s she made most of the clothes that she wore. She also loved to make matching holiday dresses for her daughters and later for her four granddaughters. Family members have knitted Christmas stockings which hang on the mantle each year. Perhaps her most enthusiastic passion was quilting. A Board member of the Cimarron Valley Quilters’ Guild, she has made countless gorgeous, colorful quilts and other quilted items over the years. These projects are treasured reminders of her love and talent.

Susan is preceded in death by her parents, George Fannon and Iva (Mihlfeld) Fannon, her sister Marie Fettinger, three nephews and one niece.

Susan is survived by her daughters: Chris (Mike) Wright and Anne (Billy) Bowen; granddaughters: Miranda Adams, Abigail (Steven) Shell, Jacqueline Wright, and Gracelynn Bowen; great-grandchildren: Owen and Lily; and her nephew Mike (Dee) Parrett

Anne and Chris would like to thank the amazing caregivers from Karman Legacy Hospice, Susan’s church family from St. Andrews Episcopal, co-workers from Stadium People, and friends from Mockingbird Estates and the Quilters’ Guild for the amazing outpouring of love and support during their mom’s illness. They are in awe of the impact that their mom has had on so many lives.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, February 24 at 10:00am in First Presbyterian Church, 524 S Duncan St, Stillwater. A reception will follow at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 516 W 3rd Ave, Stillwater. Susan’s remains will be interred in the St. Andrews columbarium following the reception.
