Suzy Hicks, 69, of Stillwater, OK went to be with her Savior on December 10, 2013 at her home with loving family by her side. Services have been entrusted to the care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home and a funeral service celebrating Suzys life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, December 14 at the Memorial Park Chapel in Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa with Brother Joe Day officiating. Public visitation will be held on Friday, December 13, at the Palmer Marler Funeral Home from 8:00am 8:00pm with the family greeting friends from 6:00-8:00pm.
Nancy Suzanne (Lehr) Hicks, also known as Suzy, was born on December 11, 1943 in Chelsea, OK to Calvin H. and Louise M. (Falwell) Lehr. She grew up in the Tulsa area, graduating from McLain High School in 1961. After graduating, Suzy attended Hillcrest Nursing School, where she received her RN License. In 1965, Suzy married her high school sweetheart George Hicks in Tulsa, OK. Weeks after the wedding, George and Suzy moved to Florida while George finished his enlistment with the U.S. Navy. After 18 months in Florida, George and Suzy moved back to Oklahoma and settled in Tulsa. Suzy worked at multiple hospitals in the Tulsa area including St. Francis and Hillcrest. In 1975, the family relocated to Owasso and in 1982, Suzy began a 20 + year career working for Dr. Kris Armstrong, eventually retiring in 2003. In 2006, George and Suzy moved to Stillwater to be closer to their family. While in Stillwater, Suzy and George attended Countryside Baptist Church and Suzy was an active member of Stillwater Exchange Club.
Suzy was a selfless woman who always put others needs before her own. She put her nursing skills to work by volunteering at the Stillwater Community Health Center and she enjoyed attending her childrens and grandchildrens activities. Suzy enjoyed the simple things in life. Her faith and her family were very important parts of her life. She took in many strays, both animals and people. Suzy loved to make sweets for her friends and family and her cooking and generosity made her very popular throughout her Windmill Heights neighborhood.
She loved to make people smile and while she always had a joke to tell, there was a good chance that any joke you told her would go right over her head. Suzy had an exemplary work ethic, but when she was not working her and George enjoyed fishing and traveling to South America, Central America, Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean Islands.
She fought a courageous battle against cancer and surpassed doctors expectations time after time. Suzy made the best out of her illness and even during her toughest days she never complained or gave up. Suzy Hicks was an amazing woman who truly lived her life. She was a devoted wife, a caring mother, a loving grandma, a trusted caregiver, and a loyal friend. She was a mother to many and a friend to all and she will be missed.
Suzy is preceded in death by her parents, Calvin and Louise (Falwell) Lehr and daughter Karie Lynn Hicks. She is survived by her husband, George Hicks, of the home; two children, David Hicks and wife, Anna of Stillwater, Don Hicks and wife Tammy of New Port, N.C.; brother Larry Lehr, and wife Barbara of Cushing; sister Sherry Phillips of Hot Springs, AR.; 5 grandchildren: Hunter Hawks, Hayden Hawks, Chris Hicks, Seth Hicks, and Samuel Hicks; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other special family members.
The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses at Judith Karman Hospice for their kindness and excellent care and in lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Suzys name to Judith Karman Hospice in care of Palmer Marler Funeral Home 5106 N. Washington, Stillwater, OK 74075.
