Velva Carlie Stein passed away at the age of 86 on April 6, 2012 at her home in Stillwater. Services have been entrusted to Palmer Marler Funeral Home and will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Buchanan Funeral Service (8712 N. Council Rd.) in Oklahoma City. Reverend Wesley Peterman from Laverne, OK will preside. Burial will follow in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery (8701 Northwest Expressway). The Family will receive friends for the visitation from 10:00 A.M. until noon at Buchanan Funeral Service on Tuesday, April 10, 2012.
Born Velva Carlie Harden on May 1, 1925 to Grover C. Harden and Carlie D. Young east of Fay, Oklahoma on the family farmstead, She attended a one room school, Champion School District #54, and then went to Fay, graduating in 1943.
She met Clifford Stein in 1943, and they married while he was on leave from the service on February 15, 1944. After he left for WWII, she went to work for Douglas Aircraft from 1943 to 1946 as a Riveter. When he returned they moved to Watonga, OK to set up the Stein Cabinet Shop. She learned the woodworking trade and loved working beside her husband. They shared their musical talents with others in a square dance band known as the Roman Nose Ramblers and performed on an early morning broadcast from the Woodward Radio station KSIW. She was the fiddle player in the band. They played for square dancers throughout the southwest district. Velva and her husband owned several small businesses before deciding to go into the home building. When they moved to Crescent, OK, Velva designed the homes they built at Lake Lottawanna. Upon retirement, in 1981, they built one final home near El Reno before moving to Stillwater, OK to be near their daughter.
Velva was preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.
She is survived by her husband Clifford, the love of her life for 68 years, two brothers, two children, Roger Stein and wife Pam of Newalla, OK, and Rita Biswell and husband Larry of Stillwater, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren. Velva will be remembered by her family and friends as Smiley because she always had a smile on her face.
