Vernon Johnson

Services for Vernon L. Jack Johnson are planned for 10:00 AM, Saturday September 15, 2007 at the Palmer Marler Carberry Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Cecil Riding In officiating. Jack died Tuesday September 11, 2007 in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Johnson, the son of the late Robert L. and Mayme Ebbeler Johnson was born west of Stillwater in the Vassar community July 26, 1925. Attending Payne County and California Public schools, graduating from class A&B schools at the Almeda Naval Air Station and The Amphibious Training Center in Little Creek, Virginia. He was then assigned to The Landing Ship USS LSM No. 71 on the day of commissioning at Houston Texas, where he spent the balance of his Naval career in the South Pacific and in the occupation of Japan. He participated in the invasion of Tokyo Bay August 27, 1945 and witnessed the signing of the Cease Fire Treaty on The Battle Ship Missouri on September 2, 1945. He received the Captains citation for going beyond the call of duty during the invasion of Okinawa. Other awards include one Battle Star Ribbons: Asiatic-Pacific Theater, Philippine Liberation and Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign and Victory Medal. Returning home in June 1946 Johnson worked for The J.C. Penney Company and the Railway Express Agency before beginning employment with the Stillwater Public schools where he retired with 33 years of service as director of support personnel and school services. Johnson and Mable Brown were married June 10th, 1950 in Chandler, Ok. They made their home in Stillwater for the balance of their lives. His wife predeceased him in death June 14th 1993 as well as three brothers: Glenn, Chester and Irvin Johnson and Two sisters Louise Longan and Lora Hunt, One Grandson Micah Lawrence Johnson. Survivors include: 3 nephews: Bob and Linda Thomas of Stillwater, Ok, John and Karen Thomas of Missouri City, Tx., Jim Johnson of Nampa, Id, 5 nieces: Jr. and Karen Huff of Claremore, Ok, Jo and Cecil Riding In of Pawnee, Ok, Georgia Stanley of Stillwater, Ok, Margie McGee of Boise, Id, and Wanda Dunn of Long Beach, Ca, granddaughter: Misty and great granddaughter: Zoe Anastasia Johnson of Oklahoma City, two sons: Gary Johnson of Moore , Ok and David and wife Jeannea of Oakland California, three grandchildren Pamela Rene of Tulsa, Taylor Lee and Payton Lauren of Oakland, Ca. Other survivors are one sister: Lenora Moore of Claremore, Ok. Jack loved and treasured all the other members of his family and the host of friends that made life a true blessing. Johnson was a member of Southside Baptist Church were he taught classes for 33 years from the primary through the senior adults.
