William August Smith

William August Smith, age 91, was born July 14, 1917, in Noble County, Oklahoma, to Peter J. and Margaret (Ritthaler) Smith. He passed from this life Sunday, December 14, 2008, in Dallas, Texas. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Friday, December 19, 2008 at Zion Lutheran Church, 5 miles east of Perry, with Pastor Dan Thimell officiating. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery under the direction of Perry Funeral Home. He was in the landing force at Normandy and participated in the liberation of Dachau. He left the military after six years of service. He and the former Esther Boyd were married April 2, 1941 in Perry. Following Smith"s military service, the couple settled in Noble County where they farmed and raised cattle. Two children were born to the couple, Billy Joe Smith and Sherry Leona Smith. Survivors include one son, Billy Joe Smith and his wife Sally of Dallas, Texas, two granddaughters, Elizabeth Smith and Hilary Doss and one great grandson, Alexander August Doss, several nephews and nieces and many cousins. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Esther in 2003, his daughter, Sherry in 1971, his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
